re: Revizionist and FftE

I was pretty sure there was some backstory here... and ever since that ROMacedonia MfD and delinking lots of templates, those 2 keep popping up on my watchlist. Author information

I'm uploading some icons from a monastery in Macedonia, and I'm wondering, what about author information? Do I have to provide that info for icons made by monks? I see some media uploaded here have original author information (e.g. painter), and other have uploader information (i.e. user). Which one is right and what should I do in this case? Well, one of the challenges at Commons is that allthough English is the lingua franca many of us are not native English speakers - and some comments could be worded haughtier than what was actually intended. The reason I posted here was excactly to say that we DO need your services, but that you will have to contribute some more without the sysop.buttons before this community could trust you to be an admin here. Myself I've got some 700 edits at en:wiki, but wouldn't stand a snowballs chance in (you know where) if I requested adminship. And that's as it should be, I really don't know the various guidelines and stuff at en:wiki the way an admin should. The requirements for experience and participation at Commons is far lower than at en:wiki, and the rules and guidelines far simpler - but your still not "there yet" (in my opinion). The wording needs changing for sure so we should get that done. It's strange really because I've looked here a couple of times recently thinking about suggesting a nomination for you :) I came to the conclusion it was a little early for now. Images of Liancourt Rocks

According to Kudo-gun, the creater of those images said that his/her files licensed under the 'Creative Commons', but s/he said only 'Creative Commons'. Thank you. Cyprus SVG

Good job translating my line image into an SVG, but one error (I think) - the thin line linking the two parts of Dhekelia is actually part of the base, and not part of the UN line; Dhekhelia is a single unit, and not two exclaves. It's barely visible on Image:CIA-Dhekelia.png, where there's a line separating the east part of the tiny part from the UN line, but there's no separation between it and the inner line connecting with the rest of the base. Hello and thanks for your kind comments about my work.
I´m travelling this end of year and will be back only in January, so I will for now only be able to give you a fast answer. I started to write tutorials (only in French for now) about map creation. The page about the principal sources and software used is here (more detailed list of available sofware here).
At first glance these pages will afraid you because they are very long and seem to be very complicated, but they aren´t and their length is only due to the fact that I detailled a lot the steps to ease the understanding.
I hope you will be able to understand everything in French. If you have problems or questions I´ll be glad to help you more, just let me know in January.

I'm very glad to see that you had the courage to read the tutorials which I know, are far to be concise. Congrats for this nice first map!

May I give you some advise about the shaded relief layer for which I think you missed some points? In the SRTM data there's no information about the underwater relief, so this part can be discarded: keep the shading over the land and delete from it all the sea areas. I think also this layer makes the map a bit too pale in your map. It seems you applied a semi-transparent effect for the shading which makes look the colors of the elevations washed out and I think a better rendering can be achieved by keeping only the shadows. This can be made by first deleting the gray color of the flat areas (in The Gimp, select the gray of the sea or a flat area in land, then 'Color' -> 'Color to alpha' – with the shaded relief layer active – ) and then the white of the illuminated side of the relief (save the image in PNG format).

The secondary and positive consequence of both actions is that your shaded relief image will be much lighter, usually several hundreds of Ko, and so your final map.

Hi!
I tried many times making work this file uploading many modified versions in my working file in WP-fr... no way! So I gave up and uploaded a raster version to have peace...
MediaWiki is really boring: you must always be ready to have problems with SVG images (I mean later...). A mess. Everything run fine for months with this map until a few weeks ago. I don't even try to understand anymore, maybe the very large dimensions? I see the Finnish version has problems too now: for me the thumbnail is still displayed but no more the background map in the description page.

Maps

Hi! You seem to know much about copyright. Could you please explain if there is a way to use this database as a source for maps here or at least on other Wikipedia projects? They say that "[t]his dataset is freely available for academic and other non-commercial use. Redistribution or commercial use is not allowed without prior permission", but I am a bit confused. Does the latter clause apply to maps partially derived from the dataset (which is in turn derived from other databases) or only to the dataset itself? PZmaps (talk) 23:03, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Hmm, good question. difficult to say. Perhaps it would be safer to just ask them? I wouldn't expect they'd be opposed to our uses here. Perhaps just send them a sample of what you want to create and ask if they have a problem if you release that under cc-?

"Stolen" photo

That photo was posted quite a long time ago, I can't really recall the places because I post a lot of photos. Mostly forums probably... Anyway I didn't accuse anyone and I don't consider it stolen because I always give permission for the photos to be used freely. I don't want it removed from wikipedia, I'm glad it is here. The only thing that bothered me was the incorrect description. Now that it has been fixed all is fine. I don't feel the need for my name to be on it, it can stay like this. Somebody bothered to upload it and to serve a purpose however small that purpose is... that's the important part. It's wikipedia after all :) BuildMk (talk) 23:39, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Maps

Hi Future Perfect. I'm glad that you and Sting appreciate my map of Slovenia. I mostly do battle maps, historical or administrative maps, but I thought about giving a try with topographic maps. I now think that even a historical map would look better with the topography included.

Thank you for the VMAP0 method link. Unfortunately I don't know anything about programming language and I never used PERL. It's quite difficult to make something of the instructions given in the article ([1]). Which of the two methods should I use in the case of VMAP0? Can you please write me a more detailed step-by-step short guide about this. I would very much appreciate it!

Hi Andrei. Basically, the method you need is the one described on page 6 of the document I linked to, in the left column. The code shown in the example is supposed to be shell commands, i.e. commands that you type either into the GRASS console (the "gis.m" window), or into the system console window (on MS-Windows, the so-called "DOS box") while GRASS is running. But it's the same thing you can also do by calling up the "v.in.ogr" import command from the GRASS graphical interface menu. It's less complex than it looks, you can actually reduce it to a single command, it just takes a rather long command string then.

Example: let's suppose you are on Windows, you have your VMAP0 data in a directory called "C:\VMAP0", and inside that directory you have a subdirectory tree containing "v0eur_5/vmaplv0/eurnasia" (for the European data).

gltp:/vrf/C:/VMAP0/v0eur_5/vmaplv0/eurnasia

That's the string you enter in the "OGR datasource name" field in the graphical interface, or you insert it as

dns="gltp:/vrf/C:/VMAP0/v0eur_5/vmaplv0/eurnasia"

if you're typing out the full GRASS command by hand.

In the "OGR layer name" field (or "layer=..." in the command string), suppose you want the political boundary layer, which is called "polbndl", which is part of the "bnd" (boundaries) set and of the "line" type. Then you need to type out a source string like this:

polbndl@bnd(*)_line

Other layer codes:

You should also use the "import subregion only" parameter (otherwise it will import all data from the whole of Eurasia.)

For some layers, it is useful to use the "WHERE" parameter too. For instance, if you query "roads", you can add either

rtt=14

or:

rtt=15

14 means primary roads, 15 means secondary roads. For contour lines, you can say:

zv2=1000

to get only the contours at the 1000m level, and so on. A full list of what layer names and WHERE parameters are available exists somewhere in a document called "VMap0 Coverages" (you need to google for it, I have it stored on my computer but don't remember the url.)

So, the final command string with all parameters might end up something like:

v.in.ogr -z --overwrite where='rtt=15' spatial=27,42,30,45 dsn='gltp:/vrf/C:/VMAP0/v0eur_5/vmaplv0/eurnasia' layer='roadl@trans(*)_line' output='mymap_sec_roads'

Like with SRTM and SWBD import, you need to run this command while you are in a LatLon location in GRASS. Afterwards you transfer it from the LatLon to your projection just like you would with an SWBD vector map.

If you want to use the perl script I have, you just need to install Perl on your system, copy two files (which I'd send you) into your Grass directory, create a LatLon Location with the correct VMAP parameters once (you can reuse it for every later project), and then you can just say, in the system command console, directly while having GRASS open in your target Location:

perl ..\scripts\get.vmap0

And on being prompted for input, you just name the data layer, and the script does all the rest.

Hmm, not sure. I suppose you have double-checked that the path to your VMAP files is correct? (I might not understand all issues here, because I run this on Linux on my machine and I gather you are on Windows; there might be some issues about how to code the parameters in the command string. Maybe play around a bit with where to put quotes around the parameters, or use the Windows-typical "\" characters in the path instead of the forward slashes? Sorry I can't be of more help right now. I have one more question. How do you get the N,S,W,E coordinates for a Lambert Conformal Conic or an Orthographic projection in GRASS? With the Slovenia map I reprojected the 3DEM SRTM map in dlgv32 Pro and then wrote down the X and Y figures from the View>Properties window. Is there any other way to do this?

Well, unfortunately VMAP0 doesn't seem very useful to me. The boundaries layer is copyrighted, the railways and roads are terribly out of date and the position of rivers is not precise enough for maps based on SRTM3 and is sometimes plainly wrong, so ultimately there is no other choice but to track them manually on Landsat imagery and hydrological models created with GRASS GIS (the latter is very helpful in the case of mountainous regions). I agree with you. It took me about 4 hours just to fix the rivers on my latest map ([2]). I had to adjust almost every one of them manually. That was horrible. And yes you're right, the roads and railways are out of date. I take it they are as of 1998-1999. Could we somehow create our own Wiki GIS database using reliable maps and GoogleEarth. It's very easy to spot the rivers, roads etc. in GoogleEarth (or GoogleMaps), so maybe there's a way to use it.

As to Albania and Macedonia, in VMAP-0 the railway and road network is as of the 1960s at best. GoogleEarth is unfortunately copyrighted, but on the plain most roads and rivers are visible on Landsat imagery, which is free, and in the mountains the streams can be predicted if you play with [Raster>Terrain analysis>Slope] and [Raster>Hydrologic modeling>Topographic index map] in GRASS. However, I am not sure that such precision is needed for historical maps. Many rivers change their course over time. PZmaps (talk) 20:11, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

You're right, I found the rivers and roads info for Greece very faulty too. I'm not aware of those problems with the copyright status of the boundaries though, could you point me to some info?

Creating our own database sounds like an interesting task. Is there some software that could take an SVG and the corresponding projection information and calculate the vectors back into some GIS-compatible format? Fut.Perf. ☼ 17:16, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Those files that are in .png format could have been made in any image editor, I don't know, but there are important advantages in doing them in SVG and with Inkscape. It's fairly similar to work with. As for blank maps, if you just want to create an historical political boundaries map like the Austrian Empire one, you could first look at Category:SVG maps of Europe, such as File:Blank map europe no borders.svg. I'm not sure we have blank maps with old political boundaries already drawn in, so you'd have to find and draw the boundaries by hand, probably. If you need a specific geographical region with coastlines that you can't find a good blank template for, I could probably make you one. Fut.Perf. ☼ 20:23, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Mmm, those maps were .svg at the english Wikipedia, but when I imported them to Commons I put .png format because because I don¿t know how to use the Inkscape very well, if they are vectorial graphics so they have been created with Inkscape?

Wow, looks great. But you may be right, the mountain shading might do with a little less shade, to make it even more appealing. – 6.50N is probably a typo, right? Should be 6.50W. If that doesn't work, have you tried entering it as a degrees-minutes-seconds value (06:30:00W) rather than decimal? By the way, check out http://www.openstreetmap.org for free roads data, since we were talking about that the other day. Wow! The openstreetmap.org website is great. Amazing. How have they gathered so much information? Have they used satellite images? Yes I see you can export their data in SVG format, but there's no option for Shapefile. I can't wait to make some city maps!

Apparently, their main idea is that you work on the ground, by collecting GPS data from locations you actually go to. But they also have satellite images that you can use to trace things. As for exporting, this help page mentions at least one download format that is compatible with OGR (which is the import library used in GRASS). The mountains look just ok with me. However, don't use windroses and arrows if there is a coordinate grid, it is redundant and looks unprofessional. The Openstreetmap looks great indeed, seems to be fairly accurate, thanks, but I have not yet tried to use it. And they have up-to-date state boundaries, where do they take them from? Yes, those maps, at least all those that were published in print around the time of their creation, are all safely in the public domain, and mere mechanical reproductions of them do not attract new copyright according to US law (see Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag). There are certain challenges to the extent of this rule in some countries (see Commons:Reuse of PD-Art photographs and the recent legal complaints of the British National Portrait Gallery), but the Wikimedia Foundation explicitly encourages its projects to rely on the US definitions even for those countries; moreover, as far as I know, a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a paper document (as opposed to a carefully lit photograph of a painting from a distance, which requires more technical effort) would be far less likely to be considered copyrightable even in countries like the UK. hrvatska map

I finished this map, as promised earlier. [5] I did it before actually, but one of the users had a problem because I did not include enough islands. Hopefully it could replace the current poor map on the banovina hrvatska page. This one is better because it is first clearer and second it shows towns which are key. I'm afraid the source I used is rather unspecific about this; it in fact only says "1st millenium BC". My understanding is that most colonies were established between the 8th and the 6th century BC, and that the dialectal and cultural affinities of each place, once colonized, would be relatively stable afterwards. I don't know enough about the details of the colonization history to be able to tell from the inclusion or exclusion of any particular coloured speck on that map whether one particular time point within this whole period rather than another was intended. Obviously, the boundaries between the coloured areas and the adjacent non-coloured areas of Italy are intended to be approximate and shouldn't be interpreted as precisely meaningful. The selection of poleis shown and named is my own (the source map only contained anonymous coloured areas), and it's not particularly systematic – I was collecting them from various lists and maps I could find, including Wikipedia lists and categories, and more or less included anything that sounded somehow notable, but without any claim to exhaustiveness. Hmm, this is getting more complicated than I saw at first. Sorry I didn't immediately notice the name on the picasa album was the same as the uploader. However, the picasa album only contains three images, one of which is clearly a non-free movie poster, so any copyright claim on that album is dubious in itself. The uploader is known for at least one further copyvio on en-wiki (en:File:Sim arasan.JPG), and I find en:File:Capture 2.JPG highly suspicious too. All three images have the typical red-flag features: web resolution, no exif data, and no explanation when and how they were taken; the two others are clearly posed portrait shots. I wouldn't bother. Commons doesn't encourage users to upload competing versions of the same file on top of each other to correct things. It also doesn't like deletion debates on the basis of content disputes like this. It just tends to ignore bad files and let them lie until it becomes clear they'll remain unused because all the local wikipedias reject them. Ah, right, Afghanistan, country of no-copyright-ever. We had a few discussions recently over the fact that while Afghanistan has no copyright law, most Afghan web sources actually work through servers abroad (there being little or no web infrastructure in the country itself), which, as I have been arguing, makes them fall under foreign copyright rules too. See Commons:Deletion requests/File:Abdul Rahman Mosque in February 2009.jpg. The other case was at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Ahmad Shah Durrani - 1747.jpg, a story of completely botched up, self-contradictory copyright claims. Yes, User:Officer has a backstory. He is en:User:NisarKand, with a sock drawer as big as his ego, who was blocked after I had to clean up this and he reacted to it like this. Ah, sorry if you didn't like the change. I take your point, but if the file consists of only text, without any special formatting, and without any particular graphic arrangement, as you would have in a diagram or map or the like, why would we use an image file in the first place? Why not simply insert the text, as text, in the Wikipedia page? I assumed that what you wanted to do was to show the user an example of characteristic typesetting of Greek text, in a properly chosen font, when the user can't be assumed to have any one particular font installed on their system. For that purpose, having a text sample converted to paths seems like the safest way of doing it.

Although, now that I think of it, there might be a technically better way with a text representation combined with an embedded font definition, but I'm not sure if Mediawiki and/or Inkscape can handle that kind of SVG. I might have a look at it.

With the previous version, I felt there were three problems: first, the chosen font (DejaVu Sans) is actually rather ugly and not in any way characteristic of the tradition of typesetting Greek. Second, the MediaWiki SVG engine seemed to be producing poor letter spacing at small sizes, making scaled versions of the image rather hard to read, at least for me. And third, if a reader were to download the file and wanted to store it and display it on their own computers (outside MediaWiki), and didn't have the DejaVu Sans font on their own system, they'd be back to square one; the SVG would probably display in very ugly ways for them. With the version I made, we can at least guarantee the reader will see something approaching a nice-looking traditional Dido-style font (I used the "Old Standard" font from here). Hey, don't be impatient; just because I don't answer within half a day doesn't mean I'm ignoring you! :-) I have two problems so far: I cannot actually find this pic on either the Matense website or on their Flickr account. The second thing is, from what you say I can't be certain the owner actually meant to release the photo for free use everywhere and for any purpose. If he just told you it's okay to use "on Wikipedia", that's not sufficient for us. We need an explicit license statement "under the terms of the CC-BY license" or similar. Our normal method for verifying such permissions is that you should please ask the owner if they could send a permission statement to that effect to "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org", or put such a statement up on their own website (e.g. if it's already on Flickr, put its license to CC-BY or CC-BY-SA there.) According to the article Dimitar Gyudzhenov in Bulgarian Wikipedia, he was a student during the Balkan wars, started to draw paintings about historical themes in 1925 and died in 1979. Hello Future Perfect! I saw your notations, first for the Evansville 1937 flood image. I added my thoughts to the discussion, immediately following yours. Next, a fascinating tile work photograph caught my eye. I left my comments after yours on the discussion page.

Finally, I wanted to mention this very lovely transportation map, merely because it involved the same user, although I don't know if you had participated in evaluating the batch of images with which it was associated. Those other images were all deemed acceptable by WP editors. I only made inquiries regarding the transportation map, my comments are here, at the very end of the page, for your reference.

A general observation: You are very thorough! It is nice to see that. I am a relative newcomer. Unfortunately, the permission statement [8] is not quite explicit enough to make it clear that this is not merely a specific permission "for Wikipedia", but a permission for free use by anybody and for any purpose. It also doesn't seem quite clear whether that admin actually is entitled to do so on their own, from the way they speak of "our photographers", so they might have to check with the actual author first. Can you please take a look on this [10], he accuses me of doing Taliban fundamentalism and use racist words like Pashtun-Tajik ideas have no place in Wikipedia. Even though i am not a Pashtun nor a Tajik it is still racist, every ethnic group is allowed to be here. I have already showed him a source, but he keeps removing the edit. I didn't know where exactly it's from at the time, but anybody with half an eye for art history can see this is a 16th-century work. Looking a bit into it, it turns out it's from Philipp Lonicer, Chronicorum Turcicorum, Frankfurt 1578. (This [14] page has a scan showing it on the printed page) This book is also mentioned as a source of such illustrations in this [15] modern edition of Barleti (apparently Barleti's Siege of Shkodra is contained in the Lonicer volume); the modern edition contains several stylistically very similar woodcuts from that source, which it attributes to en:Jost Amman. 1. The original uploader had totally 5 edits on commons and retired (link).
2. At the time you added the tag no information was presented about the work except that it has been found on the web. It only said: Author=Unknown and Source=Web, which I believe is not minimum requirement of Commons:Licensing for pd-old. You probably know that, otherwise you would not have added necessary information.
3. One editor added this image (diff) a couple of days ago. When I checked its licence I noticed this issue, which is now, thanks to you and my pointing to it, resolved. Physical ownership of the work doesn't automatically confer copyright to you. The copyright still belongs to the painter, no matter if he ever intended to "claim" it. This may seem like a bit of legalistic formality to you, but I'm afraid if you want to keep these images on the wiki, you'd need to get the painter to send a proper license release (e.g. a "cc-by-sa" statement) to Wikimedia via OTRS. Not sure if that's really worth it, of course; it's not like those paintings have any particular educational value anyway. Fut.Perf. ☼ 10:36, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

I did. The items I tagged, such as File:NavPolice5.jpg, never had concrete source information. The original uploader, User:OberRanks, only made a blanket assertion that they had been created by some US agency, but never added concrete/verifiable info about the who's, where's and how's (i.e. no url, no bibliographical identifier, no OTRS). If that's not "no source", what is? With this uploader, any sourcing/licensing claim that has no watertight proof to it should be considered non-existent anyway, as he has been shown to have routinely faked his attributions on pretty much everything he ever uploaded. Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

• To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
• To perform file name swaps.
• When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Hello Future Perfect at Sunrise, I saw that you made topographic maps of Yugoslavia and also of Greece. I'm afraid I probably won't find the time for things like that. Making these, with the software setup I was using back at the time, was quite time-consuming, and I'm not even sure I've got all the necessary stuff on my present equipment. Fut.Perf. ☼ 21:46, 26 June 2021 (UTC)
