[edit]

Dear Bastique,

we are currently working on a student textbook with the title “Biologie” scheduled to be published in 2020. In addition an electronic version of this book is planned which will be sold to scientific institutions and libraries. In this book we would like to use the following illustration

We want to kindly ask you for the nonexclusive permission to use this material in this and future editions of our book including the electronic version and for the German speaking countries (Germany/Austria/Switzerland). Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hello.

Can you add the border of South Sudan which became independent in 2011 in File:Wikimedia chapters.svg, File:Wikimedia chapters x.svg, File:Wikimedia chapters existing.svg and File:Wikimedia chapters existing and regional user groups.svg? (There is not a Wikipedia chapter in South Sudan.)

Wikipedia v2 logo authorship

[edit]

Hey Cary! Although File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-en.svg correctly lists the Wikimedia Foundation for attribution, it would be useful to also list who at the Wikimedia Foundation actually created it. Right now, that seems to be unknown, but you are the most likely candidate since you unloaded the file. Can you confirm whether or not you are the person who actually created v2 of the Wikipedia logo? i.e. designed and implemented it? (I know Nohat designed v1 of the logo.) Kaldari (talk) 02:12, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Believe it or not, I actually don't remember. I assume I did, but maybe someone else had begun the work that I completed. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 03:36, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Kaldari, 2020 was a bad year for me and my memory. Yes, I did the primary work on the v2 logo, although with the help and support of other individuals. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 18:26, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:CommonsJoe has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this user page, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Why did you delete "Main Page/es" as "not necessary"? Trying to find the Spanish-language homepage ("Portada") within the multilingual Wikimedia Commons is not obvious. Even worse, "Portada" has the same meaning in Asturian, Catalan, Galician, Portuguese, and Spanish, so it is inappropriate to use the page title of "Portada" for the Spanish language, without specifying which specific language is being used, e.g. "Portada/es" or "Portada/pt". All MediaWiki installations (regardless of the language used) recognize the English-language page of "Main Page" as the default (since the MediaWiki software is written in English, and then translated into other languages). For a multilingual wiki though, there must be a way to distinguish between multiple-language uses for the same Main Page. The best way to do this is either with a subpage, i.e. "Main Page/es" or with a namespace, i.e. "es:Main Page" which can then redirect to "es:Portada." Language namespaces are not set up on Wikimedia Commons though, and "es:Main Page" redirects to the Spanish Wikipedia, instead of to the Spanish homepage for Wikimedia Commons. I transwikied this discussion to the Wikimedia Commons Village Pump since many different pages are affected (not just the one you deleted): "Commons:Village pump/Proposals#multilingual Commons". Nicole Sharp (talk) 02:31, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Bastique, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

EU multimedia

[edit]

Hey there. I asked about this on the Commons:Help desk, but I guess I can also ask someone on their talk page. The following text will just be pasted from the help desk :) "I have been wondering. So, I have been uploading images from the European Commission as I know those images are okay to upload on to Commons. Recently, I have also seen images from the European Parliament being uploaded under the European Union Government license. So my question is if it's also alright to upload these images as well? There are some images like these ones dating back to 2006 for example, and some even way back to 1995. Are each and every one okay to use?" Bakir123 (talk) 18:09, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
